I wanted to give you guys a chance to preview the book before it goes out to the public. That way, you’ll know what you’re talking about when you recommend it to your friends and family! So I’m going to post a segment from each chapter every few days. That will give you time to read and to make a comment on the site. If something moves you, please tell the rest of us why. What’s your story? I know you have one.
Get it On is the story of the guys around me during the battle of Mogadishu which you know from Black Hawk Down. My intention was not to give another historical account of that battle, but to use the actions of those that day to inspire others to lead the way. What I hope you gain from reading the book is an understanding of just how important you are as an individual to the people on your left and on your right. You are being counted on whether you intended to be or not. And it is the example you set that will provide purpose, direction and motivation for others to follow even if the only person you are in charge of is yourself.
I’ve gotten to do a great deal of interviews with lots of different media folks on radio, TV, in newspapers and trade publications. One of the common questions I get asked is “what was the hardest part about writing this book?” For me the answer is easy: Stepping outside of my comfort zone by sharing my faith and trying to incorporate that into the story without sounding preachy.
I am not a preacher, a pastor nor have I been to seminary. I can talk to you about the Bible but please don’t ask me to quote scripture, line and verses. So in order to authentically reference the Bible, I had to dig in and read those old stories I remembered from Sunday school and sermons of long ago. What I found was the old and new testaments are full of battles where extraordinary people overcame tremendous hardship and through their outstanding leadership, saved the day. The themes were common. People who did not think themselves capable of the task being asked of them, stepped up and made a difference. Why did they do it? Because it had to be done. And why did they succeed? Because God was on their side. I see our story no differently. I know that by the grace of God the only reason I am still here is because of the men He placed on my left and on my right that day.
So I hope this book will help provide you with the purpose, direction and motivation to fully realize what an extraordinary individual you are. I hope you will be inspired to use the gifts you have been given to make a difference in the lives of those around you. But remember, leading by example is never an easy task. Just like the young rangers who fought to bring each other home, and just like the unlikely heroes of the bible, you too will be called upon to step up and do something beyond what you think you can handle. The call will come to Get it On, and it will be up to you to deliver. But do not be afraid. You will succeed because you are an extraordinary individual with good people to your left and to your right. And God is on your side.
